Homemade Guacamole

Guac is not extra when you make it home! Hehe.

Guacamole is of course a classic and standard recipe! However, everyone makes it just a little differently. Here is my tried and true version of homemade guacamole.

My top three tips for the freshest and best guac:

  1. Squeeze fresh lime juice onto your mashed avocado before you add anything else to it. This way, it doesn’t turn brown while you are adding in the rest of your ingredients.
  2. Mash up your avocado in a mortar and pestle for authentic Mexican vibes.
  3. Save your avocado seeds and place one in your guacamole so that it stays fresh till consumed.

This recipe is quite simple to make. It just requires a bit of prep work, but it is totally worth it! Trust me that homemade guacamole made with fresh ingredients tastes way better than the store bought kind.

Guac tastes great on it’s own with tortilla chips or even with just a spoon. Hehe. And of course, it’s the best companion to pretty much every single Mexican dish. My husband and I simply can’t eat enchiladas, tacos, nachos, or any other type of delicious Mexican food without a side of guacamole and sour cream!

The absolute best way to eat avocados

Ingredients

  • 2 medium ripe avocados

  • 1/2 lime (squeezed)

  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)

  • 1/2 tsp jalepeño (minced)

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper

  • 1 medium tomato (finely chopped)

  • 1/2 red onion (finely diced)

  • 1/4 cup cilantro (finely chopped)

Instructions

  • Cut two ripe avocados in half. Remove the seeds and keep them aside. (Note: Don’t throw the seeds away! Save them for later. Placing avocado seeds in guacamole is one of the best ways to keep the guac fresh for a while! )
  • Scoop the avocado into a bowl. Mash well with a spoon or a pestle if you have one. (Note: If you have a mortar and pestle, it’s the absolute best to mash up your avocados for delicious guacamole with an authentic feel!)
  • Once the avocado is nicely mashed, squeeze in the juice of half a medium sized lime. Mix well. (Note: this ensures that your avocado will stay fresh and green while you finish preparing the guacamole.)
  • Next, add in 2 cloves garlic (minced) and 1/2 medium jalapeño (minced).
  • Add in 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp ground black pepper. Mix well.
  • Then, add in 1 medium tomato (finely chopped), 1/2 red onion (finely diced), and a 1/4 cup cilantro (finely chopped). (Note: Make sure both veggies are very finely chopped for a better look and taste for your guacamole.)
  • Your guacamole is ready to serve! If you wish to save it for a little while later, add an avocado seed or two and place the guac in the fridge until you are ready to eat. Enjoy with tortilla chips or as a side/topping to all of your favorite Mexican foods! 🙂

Notes

  • Squeeze your avocado gently. If it is too hard and you can’t squeeze it, it is not yet ripe. If you want your avocados to ripen faster, keep them in a bowl of rice overnight.
  • Top ways to keep your guac fresh: squeeze lime juice into the avocado first and store the finished guac with an avocado seed.
  • There are many versions of this recipe. This is my tried and true version that I came up with.  I hope you love it!
  • Vegan Option: Guac is vegan! 🙂
