Pineapple Bhel

Here is something you may or may not know about me: I am OBSESSED with pineapples. One, I love pineapple flavored anything…pineapple smoothies, piña coladas, pineapple soda, pineapple upside down cake, pineapple fried rice, etc etc. But also, I love pineapple decor! My house is literally filled with pineapple themed trinkets. Don’t believe me? Check out my pineapple themed deck below:

My pineapple themed deck! 🙂

But, the purpose of this post was not to make you think I am crazy. It was to share one of my favorite pineapple recipes of all time: PINEAPPLE BHEL.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with bhel puri, it is a classic Indian snack/street food/ chaat. This delicious savory snack involves mixing finely chopped veggies with mamra/puffed rice and a few flavorful spices. It is topped with crunchy sev, which is an absolute must.

My favorite version of bhel involves pineapples. I have had it many times on the streets of India and have learned how to make it from my mom. Now, every time there is pineapple in my house, you better believe that at least some of it will be turned into bhel!

Colorful. Flavorful. Healthy-ish.

Puffed rice mixed with pineapples, veggies, chutney, and topped with a bit of crunch!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Add all chopped fruits/veggies to a bowl : 1 cup pineapple (chopped into small cubes), 1 small tomato (finely chopped), 1 medium carrot (peeled and grated), 1/3 medium cucumber (finely chopped), and 1/2 medium onion (finely diced).
  • Toss well and then mix in 2 cups mamra/ puffed rice.
  • Add 1 tbsp spicy mint chutney, 1 tbsp sweet date chutney, 1/4 tsp black salt, 1/4 tsp chaat masala, and salt to taste.
  • Mix well and then top with a handful of finely chopped cilantro and nylon sev. Enjoy your delicious Pineapple Bhel! 🙂

Notes

  • I usually prefer to use red onion for bhel, but I used a white onion this time!
  • You can add small pieces of puri or papdi to add crunch to this bhel! I chose to stick with just sev to try to keep it on the healthier side.
  • There are many versions of this recipe. This is my tried and true version that I learned from my Mother. I hope you love it!
  • Vegan Option: This dish is Vegan. 🙂
