Two very popular South Indian dishes are Avalakki/Poha and Mosranna/ Curd Rice. However, if you combine them together, you can get a lesser known, but equally delicious dish: Mosru Avalakki/ Curd Poha!

kcalFlattened rice mixed with yogurt and a South Indian style tempering
Ingredients
2 cups avalakki/ thick poha
4 cups of yogurt (Check out how to make homemade yogurt here.)
Salt to taste
2 tbsp oil
1 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds
A few curry leaves
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 cup grapes (sliced in half)
A handful of finely chopped cilantro
Instructions
- Add 2 cups of avalakki/ poha to a bowl. Rinse with water and drain. Repeat twice to wash the avalakki.
- Then, add fresh water. Add enough water to completely cover the avalakki/poha. Let it soak for 5 minutes.
- After 5 minutes, drain the water in a strainer/colander and transfer the avalakki to another bowl. Let dry. Keep aside.
- To a separate bowl, add 4 cups yogurt and 1/2 cup milk. Whisk smooth and remove all lumps.
- Add salt to taste and mix well.
- Then, mix in the dry avalakki/poha. Keep aside.
- To make the tempering, heat up 1 tbsp oil in a small pan at a low flame.
- Add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds to the oil.
- Once the mustard seeds start to crackle, add 1 tsp jeera/ cumin seeds, 1 tsp chana dal, 1 tsp urad dal, a few curry leaves, and 1/2 tsp ground black pepper.
- Sauté for a few minutes. The dal should change color slightly and become golden.
- Take tempering off flame and add to the avalakki/yogurt.
- Mix in 1/2 cup grapes (sliced in half) and garnish with a handful of finely chopped cilantro. Enjoy!:)
Notes
- This recipe works best for thick poha and not thin poha.
- It is important to soak the avalakki/ poha with water in order to prevent it from becoming too hard.
- It is important to properly dry the avalakki/poha to prevent it from becoming too mushy.
- Instead of grapes, you could use pomegranate as well.
- There are many versions of this recipe. This is my tried and true version that I learned from my Mother. I hope you love it!
- Vegan Option: Use Vegan Yogurt and Dairy-Free milk.
