This is one of the most simple but also most versatile Indian rice dishes of all time. Jeera Rice is a quick way to dress up plain rice. But, similar to plain rice, it is still eaten with a side dish. North Indian curries especially, including Dal/lentil based curries and gravy based curries, taste absolutely fabulous with Jeera Rice!
There are a few different ways to make Jeera Rice. The way that I am going to show you is the quick and simple way that I usually make it using a Rice Cooker. I have two slight variations. Check out both below!

kcalBasmati rice tossed in a simple jeera/cumin seed based tempering
Ingredients
1 cup Basmati Rice (uncooked)
1.5 cup water
1 tbsp oil or ghee (Check out how to make homemade ghee here.)
2 tsp jeera/cumin seeds
1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Add 1 cup uncooked Basmati Rice to the bowl of a rice cooker. Rinse with water and drain. Repeat twice to wash the rice.
- Cover rice with 1.5 cups of water.
- Option 1
- Add 1 tbsp oil or ghee, 2 tsp jeera/cumin seeds, and 1/2 tsp salt to the water. Mix well. Cook rice in rice cooker.
- Option 2
- Cook plain rice in the rice cooker.
- Heat 1 tbsp oil or ghee in a sauté pan at a medium flame.
- Add 2 tsp jeera/cumin seeds to the oil/ghee.
- Once the cumin seeds brown, add in the cooked rice.
- Also add 1/2 tsp salt. Fry the rice in the oil/ghee for a minute or two and mix well. Take off flame and enjoy hot! 🙂
Notes
- Long grain rice such as Basmati Rice or Jasmine Rice is preferred for Jeera Rice instead of shorter grain rice such as Sona Masoori Rice. I prefer Royal Basmati brand Basmati Rice.
- Some add other spices and flavors to Jeera rice. I prefer the basic, jeera only based version.
- There are many versions of this recipe. This is my tried and true version that I learned from my Mother. I hope you love it!
- Vegan Option: Use oil and not ghee and this recipe is Vegan. 🙂
