Homemade Ghee

If you have never had a dollop of homemade ghee on top of a hot, delicious bowl of rice , you are seriously missing out.

Ghee doesn’t just taste good on rice, it’s scrumptious on top of most Indian dishes. In addition, ghee is often used for cooking instead of oil or butter.

Ghee is essentially clarified butter. While ghee does contain a high level of fat, it is good for the heart and joints.

You can buy ghee at any Indian store and most grocery stores. However, it’s quiet easy to make it on your own at home!

All you need is some butter. Once you make your ghee, you can store it outside for a few weeks at a time! No need to keep it in the fridge.

5 Reasons to Make your Own Ghee at Home:

  1. It’s pretty easy to make – all you need is butter (unsalted)!
  2. You can avoid any preservatives that are used in store bought ghee.
  3. Turning butter into ghee extends its shelf life and you can store ghee without refrigerating it for a few weeks.
  4. While ghee is a fat, it does have a few health benefits.
  5. You can use ghee for cooking instead of oil or butter… or just on top of most foods! Either way, it tastes absolutely mouth watering! 😋

How to make clarified butter at home from regular butter

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter

  • Optional: A pinch of turmeric

Instructions

  • Heat a small pot at a medium flame.
  • Add 2 sticks of butter and let melt.
  • Optional: add a pinch of turmeric for a bit of color and added health benefits!
  • As the melted butter heats up, it will start to foam.
  • Shake the pot. After a while , the white foam will evaporate and clear bubbles will start to form.
  • Once the butter starts to bubble, turn off the flame. Make sure that the ghee is a single color.
  • Transfer to your ghee container. You can enjoy your ghee right away! Or, you can let it cool and harden. Enjoy 🙂

Notes

  • It is very important to use unsalted butter. If you use salted butter, your ghee will become brown instead of yellow/white.
  • Store ghee outside on a countertop for a few weeks. No need to keep it in the fridge.
  • There are many versions of how to make homemade Ghee. This is my tried and true version that I learned from my Mother. I hope you love it!
  • Vegan Option: Use Vegan butter to make Vegan Ghee.
