Batani Usli/ Peas Masala

Batani Usli is a simple dish made with peas that is absolutely dripping with flavor. You can also make the same recipe with averakai/ papdi lilva for Averakai Usli.

One of my favorites ways to eat Batani Usli is with Poori. However, it tastes great with plain chappati as well. Click here to see how to make Poori.

Add some coconut chutney and you have a complete, absolutely delicious breakfast! Click here for my classic coconut chutney recipe.

Green peas in a simple cumin spiced masala

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • 2-4 green chilis (minced)

  • 2 medium yellow onions (finely diced)

  • 2 cups green peas

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 tsp cumin powder

  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a sauté  pan at a medium flame.
  • Add 2-4 green chilis (minced) and 2 medium yellow onions (finely diced). Sauté till translucent.
  • Next, add 2 cups of green peas.
  • Pour in 1/4 cup of boiling water. (Boiling water ahead of time speeds up the process.)
  • Cook covered for a while. Keep stirring in between.
  • Once the peas are cooked (test one to make sure), add 1/2 cup milk, 2 tsp cumin powder, and salt to taste.
  • Cook for a while longer, until the dish starts to bubble. Take off flame and enjoy Batani Usli with some hot pooris! 🙂

Notes

  • Instead of green peas, you can use Averakai/Papdi Lilva for Averakai Usli. The recipe is the same and it is also quite delicious!
  • I prefer to mince my green chilis in a grinder. However, you can finely mince them by hand or even just slit them.
  • There are many versions of these recipes. This is my tried and true version that I learned from my Mother. I hope you love it!
  • Vegan Option: This dish can easily be made vegan by using Dairy-Free milk. I would suggest Coconut Milk for this recipe.

Hi Mandeeep! You could use dried peas and soak overnight and cook as you mentioned. However, this recipe is better for fresh/frozen peas. 🙂

  2. Hi
this recipe looks interesting and i would like to give this a shot. However i had a quick question. Can i use dried green peas for this recipe? I know i would have to soak it overnight and probably cook it in the pressure cooker as well. Would the taste be better if i use fresh/frozen peas?
    thank you!
