Seven Layer Taco Dip is one of the most classic party appetizers of all time! My version is vegetarian and the 7 layers consist of: a creamy bean base, sour cream, guacamole, shredded cheese, tomatoes, onions, and garnishes (olives, jalapeƱos, scallions).

All the loaded layers combined with delicious Mexican flavors create a delicious dip that everyone will love!  Seven Layer Taco Dip is always a crowd pleaser at any party and I guarantee that this spooky spider version will be the hit of your Halloween party!

Seven Layer Dip is a great appetizer for any time of the year. Feel free to skip the spooky spider web and extend your layer of cheese and toppings. Dig in with your favorite brand of tortilla chips! I am personally partial to Tostitos Scoops!

Classic seven layer bean dip with a spooky twist involving a sour cream web and a friendly olive spider

Ingredients

  • 1 cup refried beans (8 oz can)

  • 1/2 cup sour cream for the dip & 2 tbsp sour cream for the spider web

  • 1 cup guacamole (8 oz packet or check out my homemade version here)

  • 1/4 cup shredded Mexican cheese

  • 1/2 medium tomato (finely chopped)

  • 1/4 medium red onion (diced)

  • A handful of black olives, jalapeƱos, and/or scallions (all sliced into thin circles)

Instructions

  • Obtain a clear, round dish such as a circular Pyrex baking dish. A clear dish allows you to clearly see all the layers. A round dish visually adds to the “Spider-Web” concept.
  • Warm up 1 cup (one 8 oz can) refried beans on the stove or in the microwave.
  • Layer 1: Spread an even layer of warmed refried beans at the bottom of the clear, round dish.
  • Layer 2: Spread about 1/2 cup sour cream on top to get an even layer about 1/2″ thick.
  • Layer 3: Add about 1 cup of guacamole on top. Spread to get an even, smooth layer of green.
  • Layer 4: Sprinkle about a 1/4 cup of shredded Mexican cheese along the outer layer of the dip to form a ring on top of the guacamole.
  • Layer 5: Top with finely chopped tomatoes (about 1/2 medium tomato).
  • Layer 6: Sprinkle diced red onions (about 1/4 medium onion).
  • Layer 7: Add a handful of your garnish of choice: jalapeƱos, olives, and/or scallions.
  • It’s time to make your spider web! Add 2 tbsp of thick sour cream to a small squirt bottle. Squeeze out the sour cream and draw a spider web on top of the guacamole. (Note: See video below!)
  • Top with a friendly olive spider or plastic spider. Enjoy your Seven Layer Spider Dip with your favorite brand of Tortilla Chips! I am partial to Tostitos Scoops! šŸ™‚

Notes

  • If you want to make regular Seven Layer Dip, skip the spider web and extend your layer of shredded cheese and toppings! (Layers 4-7).
  • There are many versions of this recipe. This is my tried and true version that I came up with.Ā  I hope you love it!
  • Vegan Option: Use vegan cheese and vegan sour cream to make dish vegan. Also, if you are using store bought refried beans, make sure that they are vegan friendly!
